Taupo

November 24th, 2003 Posted in Scenery, Travel

Taupo is home to the largest lake in New Zealand, named, strangely enough, Lake Taupo. It really is a nice lake, and it’s even visible from the YHA hostel. I was able to dine on a nice Subway sandwich on the waterfront. How’s that for style? This city, like Rotorua and others, has a number of adventures one can risk their life on. Most notable are two of the most popular, Taupo Bundy and Skydive Taupo. I decided to take a dayhike to New Zealand’s most visited attraction.

New Zealand’s most visited attraction is Huka Falls, and while it’s a nice color blue and white, it really is nothing special, but, it is easy to drive to. I hiked a few miles to the falls, a few miles past, then proceeded to hike to the Crater of the Moon, which have a bunch of steaming craters. The road there is all up hill, and a gracious bus driver picked me up as I was heading to the top. It was cool, but the day was already long, so I took the bus back and didn’t do anything too strenuous the rest of the day.
