American Culture
November 17th, 2003 Posted in CultureAs I was walking down to this Internet cafe, I heard a familiar song in a style that was new to me, U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” in reggae style. A few seconds later, Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” was on the scene. At the movie theatre, all American movies. I knew American culture was a pervasive influence in the world, but it’s another thing to see it. There’s a Starbucks on every corner, just like Denver and Seattle. When I first got here, the temptation to stick with the familiar, with the brand I trust, was very strong. I will admit I did have my favorite meal at Wendy’s, just to see if it was indeed the same.
I’ve been in Auckland for 3 days now. I’m doing research on what to do next. I’ll probably be heading south tomorrow.
